Help women prisoners

“Granting spiritual and material support to women prisoners and their children born in a place of confinement ”.
One of the oldest projects being fulfilled within 18 years is “Granting spiritual and material support to women prisoners and their children born in a place of confinement ”.  The project is very important and humane. Within the period of the project performance 25,000 women prisoners in Chernihiv, Uman, Kharkiv, Odesa, Poltava, Zaporizhya, Dniprodzerzhinsk prisons; 3,700 children whose mothers serve a term of imprisonment in correctional facilities and also the Home of Child of Chernihiv penal colony have been granted aid .
The project is aimed at granting spiritual and material support to women prisoners and their children (who were born in prisons) serving a term of imprisonment in correctional facilities (in Chernihiv, Ternopil, Kirovohrad, Uman, Kharkiv), in the Home of Child of Chernihiv penal colony where 35 children under 3 years of age are kept.
Currently there are 13 penal colonies in Ukraine where over 10,000 women are kept, 7,000 women having children inclusive. There are Homes of Child in some colonies where they keep children born in colonies under 3 years of age; in some colonies there is a gynecology clinic. Conditions of living for women and children in colonies are horrible – there is a lack of food, clothes, things for personal hygiene, medicine. According to unofficial statistics (official information is not disclosed) the state allocates 0.5 euro a day to keep a woman in a colony. However, social isolation proves to be even more cruel condition for women. As a rule, families of such women fall apart, their links with children and relatives break off. A woman’s personality begins to be formed by prison environment.
After their release from prison such women feel lonely. It is very difficult for them to improve their health, get their family back, find a job and provide material welfare of their children, become a rightful member of the society.
The main kind of aid being given to these women is exchanging letters with them. Over 10,000 letters have been written since the project began. We write letters to the women who address us themselves because they want help and support, first of all psychological. We only grant material aid to those who do not have relatives or any close people. This data is provided by a colony administration. Approximately 70% of such women have children. This aid was given by means of sending parcels with food, clothes, things of personal hygiene; our psychologist went to colonies, the orphanage and hospital; we organized meetings of women with their children  kept in state boarding schools or staying with their low-income relatives. But we regret to say we do not have any more finance for our further work. Therefore we kindly request you to grant us financial support so that we can continue performing this good cause.
Targets of the project:
- to regularly communicate with women prisoners by means of exchanging letters;
- to regularly communicate with and support women prisoners spiritually, morally and psychologically by means of bringing a priest and social psychologist to colonies;
- to grant material aid to women prisoners by means of sending parcels (2-3 times a year to each woman). Every parcel weighs 10 kg and is filled with: food products (sunflower oil, tinned meat and fish, biscuits, sugar, instant soups), things for personal hygiene (shampoo, soap, toothpaste/brush, sanitary pads, washing powder), humanitarian aid clothes and footwear.
- to arrange meetings of women prisoners with a priest, social worker and psychologist;
- to grant one-time aid after release from prison: issuing women with humanitarian aid things (clothes, footwear); providing them with canteen, laundry, hairdresser  service as well as psychologist's consultations and free of charge social service of Сaritas;
- to grant monthly material aid to children by means of sending parcels with things for personal hygiene: pampers, cream, baby powder);
- to grant material aid in order to help women renew their lost documents (passport)
It is not only us who will be grateful, but also the needy people who will be able to see human mercy and love due to your help.
